The workmanship on my guitar seems flawless, and the setup from theĬarvin factory is very good. Not quite as good as a higher end guitars built with solid backs and sides. It is a laminate bodied guitar, so it's unplugged acoustic tone is good, but Musician that needs a rugged stage guitar, this would be hard to beat. Without sacrificing the amplified tone of the guitar. It's one of the most solidly built acoustics I've ever played,Īnd the Fishman preamp system is optimal for filtering out feedback, I've had a Carvin C980T for two years now. There are a few forumites who have various Carvins - maybe they will chime in. The C980 seemed to be OK as a strummer/fingerpicker (he strums, I pick) - Carvin does also have dreads and some other models.ĥ) One of the best/worst features is that you can't go into a store and try one, but you can order it, keep it for 30 days and return it if you don't like it. I'm afraid I can't really characterize the tone - it has been six months or so since I played it.Ĥ) If I could stereotype it, I would say it would appeal to a stage musician who plays plugged, likes a pretty guitar (with a little bling), comes from an electric background (the electronics, neck and cutaway). I was not as impressed playing it unplugged, but frankly it was kind of a noisy venue and probably was not a good evaluation of it as a straight acoustic. Second one was good out of the box.ģ) Nice sounding git amplified (which is how my friend mostly plays). However the first guitar my friend received from Carvin he said was almost unplayable - he had a local luthier look at it, they contacted Carvin and it was replaced. I can see why the neck appeals to electric players.
His has the big Fishman barndoor in the side.Ģ) Neck and action were very low - it had a Taylor feel to the neck altho I would guess it is narrower (I didn't measure). The C980 is a jumbo cutaway with nice abalone rosette and purfling, laminated rose back and sides, spruce top. Here is my $0.02.ġ) Nice overall guitar - welll finished (very smooth and highly polished but the finish looks thick). A singer songwriter friend has a C980 and I've played it on a couple of occassions.
